Last Update (July 10, 2020)

Amufi is an oId village in Ikhuen clan near Benin City. The village is well known for a special dance they usually perform during certain ceremony (Ugie) known as Isiokuo in Benin City. Isiokuo dance is a war dance. It is used to pay homage to past and present warriors, to re-enforce the powers of charms and war implements in the olden day. During the dance in Benin City, they climb (Okha) silk cotton tree which was in the sight of the present Supreme Court along Sapele Road With the help of ropes well prepared with medicine or herbs. they move on to the top of the ‘Okha’ tree, fasten themselves to the stem, but with a system so as to enable them swing freely round the tree dancing up and down the very stem of the tree.

The most astonishing thing about this dance is that they spread out their hands and legs, Infect it is a great feat to spectators. They wore some rattles and bells and make fluttering movements with their arms. In this type of dance they seem to imitate bats or birds. It is said that the Amufi dance is performed to represent a war against the sky hence the the name ‘ ‘Isiokuo’.

The origin of the dance dates back to about 1100 A.D. after Evian had defeated the man eating animal called Osogan
Evian was the father of Ogieamien. Amufi dance was therefore used to commemorate the killing of the Osogan.
