Casual, comfortable clothes are the key when traveling in Benin kingdom/Edo state.

Edo women in general are enlightened they wear both traditional and western clothes and there are no restrictions on what can be worn. Benin kingdom/ Edo state is a "Sharia free zone" .western casual wear clothes such as jeans,T shirts and shorts are good .T-shirts can be frowned upon.

We urge you not to wear or even carry military-inspired clothing while traveling and to respect local traditions and values.

You should pack the minimum, since it is fairly easy to get your laundry done. Cotton is best when it's hot. You should take long sleeve shirts (to protect yourself against mosquito bites), slacks and shorts. You may need a sweater for cooler evenings or if you will spend any time in the highlands of north of Edo state It can get very chilly at night, the temperature may fall below 10 occasionally during amattan season. Naturally if you are going to do any mountain climbing you need the appropriate equipment.

In terms of photography, in order to take good pictures you will need a SLR camera and a 200 mm lens at a minimum. A wild angle lens is also nice to have for panoramic shots. Film is available in Benin city and other big towns
